Why India's BJP is shutting down Islamic schools in Assam

India’s right-wing Hindu nationalist government has passed a law in the northeastern state of Assam that abolishes state-run Islamic institutions and converts them into regular schools. The law, which will come into effect from April this year, will lead to the closure of more than 600 Islamic institutions that run on funds provided by the government. The regional government has said it is not willing to spend funds on “religious” education from the state’s coffers.
